Cristiano Ronaldo has ice running through his veins.

The Juventus superstar has proven time after time that when his team needs him most, he'll be on hand to score a last-minute winner, take a nerve-wrecking penalty or inspire a historic comeback.

The most recent example of Ronaldo's brilliance when the chips are down came in last season's Champions League round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid.

Having lost the first leg 2-0 in the Spanish capital, Juventus needed something special to turn things around and Ronaldo rose to the occasion with a stunning hat-trick in a 3-0 whitewash.

You could probably argue that it was Ronaldo's weakest season in the last decade, but when it mattered most for him to show his best, he duly delivered.

Ronaldo's brilliance under pressure

But if you have any knowledge of Ronaldo's career at all, you'll know that iconic night at the Allianz Stadium was by no means an anomaly.

Rather, the Portuguese has proven all throughout his career that whether or not you think he's the greatest player of all time, he's most certainly the GOAT when it comes to pressure situations.

Besides, we're sure his staunchest of supporters would back that argument by highlighting Lionel Messi in the European collapses against AS Roma and Liverpool.

'The most clutch player in football history'

But aside from those pettier comparisons, we dare say it's possible to appreciate both players on their own merit, so let's take Ronaldo's iciness under pressure in isolation.

And there's no better way we could present a history of Ronaldo's style under pressure than with Twitter user @ScofieldRM's illuminating thread on the matter.

The account has racked up over 5,000 'likes' and almost 1,000 retweets at the time of writing for the 15-post thread with the apt title of: 'The most clutch player in football history, Cristiano Ronaldo.'

From rescuing La Liga title races, securing World Cup qualification, galvanising European cup runs and much more, you can check out the full thread down below:

Ronaldo: Ice in his veins

When there's something strange at your football club, who you gonna call? Ro-naldo.

Ok, horrendous jokes aside, Ronaldo just seems to thrive upon the tension of situations that seem to be escaping his teams. It's almost as though he needs to be needed to play at his best.

And so many of those pressure moments are coming up against tough opposition such as Pep Guardiola's Barcelona and Diego Simeone's aforementioned Atletico.

When Ronaldo ups the ante when the pressure is on, it doesn't matter who he's facing, they're getting torn apart regardless of their reputation and resources.

And when the team they're playing isn't so incredible, well, low and behold, he's scoring acrobatic back-heels in the last minute against Valencia.

They've never made athletes like Ronaldo before and they'll never make one like him ever again.
