Updates on the condition of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher are few and far between.
Schumacher suffered a serious head injury during a skiing accident six and a half years ago and his condition has been kept private by his family.
Schumacher hit his head after a skiing fall on December 29, 2013, while with his son Mick. He suffered a severe brain injury, was air-lifted to hospital and placed in a medically induced coma.
He returned home after 254 days, where he remains.
However, a report now claims the German is set to be operated on in the coming days.
Italian publication Contro Copertina, via the Daily Mail, say Schumacher will undergo a stem cell operation by Dr Philippe Menasche, a French professor and cardiologist.
Dr Nicola Acciari, a leading neurosurgeon, says that Schumacher is suffering from osteoporosis and muscle atrophy, due to him being unable to move since his accident in Meribel in the French Alps in 2013.
"The goal is to regenerate Michael's nervous system,” Acciari said.
"Over the past 20 years, science has made enormous progress with stem cell treatment. But that does not change that we still do not know much about the human brain.
"We are not able to say what the results will be."
Last month, former teammate Felipe Massa admitted Schumacher remains in a "difficult situation".
"I know how he (Schumacher) is, I have information," Massa said.
"My relationship with him has always been very close. It is less close with his wife Corinna because she did not go to many races.
“But I think the main thing about all this is that we know that his situation is not easy.
"He is in a difficult phase but we need to respect him and the family."
