A group of ‘Grand Theft Auto’ players came up with a unique way to pay tribute to George Floyd and raise funds for his family.
The American recently died while in police custody, with footage showing a police officer kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
Floyd’s death has sparked mass protests around the world, with the aim being to end injustice against black people.
YouTube channel OTRGamerTV gathered a group of players to drive and march through Los Santos in memory of George, while viewers donated to the Gianna Floyd fund.
Omar Khan and Raja Hussain told LadBible: “The tribute was initially suggested by our YouTube family. We made the decision to take it to GTA Online as it’s a universal platform and would reach the wider world to bring awareness to this cause.
“We wanted to use or voice and platform to show solidarity and stand beside our subscribers across the globe. It was an honour to have so many viewers join us live and donate during this stream. To stand together and show unity to the Black Lives Matter campaign and bring awareness to the wider community was a privilege.
“We would like to show our support to the BAME community and fight against racism and oppression.”
The livestream saw over 60 people come together dressed in black. The players involved drove through Los Santos, stopping occasionally to march together and salute George.
Sony recently delayed their PlayStation 5 reveal event out of respect for the Black Lives Matter movement, and also pledged $1 million to support black communities in the US.
Meanwhile, Activision delayed the launch of Season 4 for ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’ and promised to do more to combat racist comments in its games.
Rockstar also showed their support, shutting down GTA and Read Dead’s online modes for two hours to “honour the legacy of George Floyd.”
