Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard: Football fans vote on whose career they'd prefer

  • Kobe Tong

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are two of the greatest players in Premier League history.

Seldom does a month go by where England fans don't kick themselves that they never won an international tournament with the Chelsea and Liverpool legends pulling the strings in midfield.

That being said, trying to accommodate both players - as well as Paul Scholes, of course - can actually be identified as one of the major shortcomings of Sven-Göran Eriksson's side.

But 15-year-old woes aside for a second, it's strange to think that both players kissed goodbye to their playing days more than half a decade ago and are two seasons deep into their management careers.

It's remarkable that we still bicker about the Gerrard vs Lampard argument despite the fact one is now in the dugout at Stamford Bridge and the other is barking out orders at Rangers.

Gerrard vs Lampard debate

However, when you have two England midfielders of such indelible talent and both being forever associated with two massive rivals, it's inevitable that the debate will keep raging on.

And trust us when we say we've tried everything in our power to discover a definitive answer as to which player was better and throwing Scholes into the equation does little to help things.

Nevertheless, we decided to address the debate from a new perspective this week by putting out a poll to our readers, but not with the mission of asking which midfielder was the better player.

Whose career would you rather have?

But... seeing as we mentioned it, Gerrard did come out victorious when we asked that question back in April with 55% of supporters putting their faith in the Liverpool icon.

However, things changed when we asked the question: Whose career would you rather have?

It's a difficult one, right? Lampard might have the larger trophy cabinet and a Premier League title to his name, but Gerrard has more in the way of dramatic individual performances.

Well, it seems as though football fans prefer the former because 55% of the 85,300 that cast their opinion said they'd rather have played out Lampard's career than that of Gerrard.

The debate rages on

Clearly that means supporters would rather have Premier League winners' medals in their bedside drawer than having inspired a comeback from 3-0 down in the 2005 Champions League final.

Everyone to themselves but, yes, Lampard is probably the man to pick if you want the most silverware you can possibly collect, even though Gerrard's cabinet is pretty nifty too.

That's not to say it brings us any closer to settling the debate, though, and that's the beauty of it in the first place.
