A big development has emerged in Celtic's bid to sign forward Ivan Toney this summer.

Reports on Friday claimed that West Brom were now interested and ready to battle the Hoops in signing the Peterborough striker.

Football Insider revealed the Baggies were ready to move for the 24-goal striker regardless of whether they get promoted.

Prior claims stated that Rangers and Celtic were in the market for the 24-year-old but now a fresh twist has emerged in their attempts to sign him.

West Brom are apparently in the market for a striker after struggling for regular goals from their strikers this term - Hal Robson-Kanu is their top marksman on just ten.

Posh boss Barry Fry admitted this week that any team wanting to sign Toney would have to splash £15m in order to land him.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson then stated they'd definitely have to sell him this summer.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

This should come as a significant setback for Celtic, a club who could well be in need of replacing Odsonne Edouard this summer.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move away and despite Neil Lennon's ploy to renew his contract, it remains a distinct possibility that their star man will depart.

If West Brom get promoted they'll surely be in pole position to land Toney, especially from a financial point of view.

The riches that come with reaching England's promised land are substantial and £15m would be a bargain price for a newly promoted side trying to find a proven goalscorer in today's market.

Though, if Toney wants to play in Europe, then Celtic will surely have the upper hand in the pursuit.

It remains to be seen what the player's goals are but it looks as though there could be a fierce race for him with West Brom now well and truly in the hunt.
