Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton this summer, per Football Insider.

The midfielder has been linked with a potential move to the north London club as he enters the final year of his contract at St Mary’s.

Hojbjerg is currently the club’s skipper and has made 33 appearances in all competitions this term.

It remains to be seen what kind of fee he would demand – a separate Times report claims he could cost £35 million – but Noel Whelan believes he could dig his heels in and actively seek a move.

Indeed, the pundit believes that the midfielder will want to join Spurs if they formalise their interest with a bid.

He said: “You’ve got to keep your players on your side, especially a player who has been so important to Southampton. Now you’ve got a bigger club looking at him and he’s going to want to go to Tottenham if that’s the case.

“He’s going to want to be part of that team so it’s important you don’t turn a player against the club and you start getting a player who will only do enough for you rather than the quality he’s been showing so far.

“You’ve got to be fair with the player, especially when they’re coming down to a year on their contract. You don’t want to lose them completely.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Hojbjerg might need to do what Whelan says.

There is not a lot of money floating about in the Premier League, especially for a club like Spurs.

Thus, the Denmark international, who has won 33 caps, may need to force his way out as he attempts to engineer a move.

It would be an undoubted step up for the 24-year-old, who has only been on the pitch for 10 Premier League victories this season.

Making the switch to Spurs is a no-brainer, but he needs to make it happen.
