12. PlayStation 3

First released in 2006, the PlayStation 3 was Sony's flagship product of the seventh generation of video game consoles. Competing primarily against Microsoft's Xbox 360, the PS3 originally received criticism for its high price, but also boasted a wide range of exclusives, including 'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' and 'Resistance: Fall of Man'.

11. Nintendo Switch

The successor to the generally poorly received Wii U, the Nintendo Switch was an innovative take on the portable gaming system. Capable of being cast to a TV and controlled with wireless Joy-Con controllers, or played as a handheld device, the Switch is, as the name suggests, extremely versatile and easy to enjoy. Released in 2017, the Switch continues to sell extremely well to this day.

10. Xbox 360

Microsoft's competition to the PlayStation 3. Released in 2005, the 360 is the best selling console made by an American company, and continues to feature in households all over the world. Despite not being the best selling console of its generation, the 360 is often touted as the most influential of its time, especially with developments such as the Xbox Kinect.

9. PlayStation 4

Launched in 2013, the PlayStation 4 is the fourth best-selling game system of all time, shifting over 110 million units. Praised for its range of exclusives and impressive hardware capabilities, the PS4 remains a stronghold in households throughout the world, and its success can only benefit the upcoming generation of consoles.

8. Nintendo GameCube

First released in 2001, the successor to the Nintendo 64 had a signature cuboid shape and a now iconic controller design. Its best selling games included 'Super Smash Bros.' and the console also marked the beginning of the wildly popular 'Animal Crossing' franchise, which only recently received its newest entry.

7. Personal Computer

The debate over consoles vs computers has been raging for years, and it doesn't look like it'll be going away any time soon. PC's are praised for their power and customisability, but often prove too expensive and complicated for some gamers who prefer to just plug and play. Nowadays, PCs represent an extremely large share of the gaming market, with platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store ploughing the way for essential daily game releases.

6. Nintendo 64

Released in 1996, the Nintendo 64, named for its 64-bit CPU, is one of the most iconic consoles of all time. With its signature chunky game cartridges and space invader shaped controller, the N64 is famous for games like 'Super Mario 64', which defined a generation of gaming.

5. Nintendo Game Boy

The successor to the Game & Watch system, the Game Boy was released in 1989 as a handheld game system. With its signature directional pad, game buttons and green screen, the Game Boy sold just under 120 million units, making it one of the best selling devices of all time. Its best-selling game was Tetris.

4. PlayStation

Released in 1994, the PlayStation was the first of the line of PlayStation consoles. Primarily competing with the Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn, the PlayStation sold over 100 million units during its lifetime, boasting iconic games such as 'Gran Turismo' and 'Metal Gear Solid'.

3. NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)

First released in 1985, the NES is one of the best-selling gaming consoles of all time. Following the US video game industry crash of 1983, the NES helped to revive the gaming scene with its success in the American markets. Its best selling games include 'Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3'.

2. SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)

Apart from the name, everything about this console was super. The successor to the NES, the SNES was an upgraded version of its previous version, featuring games such as 'Super Mario World', 'Donkey Kong Country', 'Super Mario Kart' and 'Street Fighter II'.

1. PlayStation 2

It would be really difficult to argue with this outcome. The PlayStation 2 is no-doubt the most influential game console of all time, not only due to its wide selection of games and content, it is also the best selling game system of all time, shifting over 155 million devices, only ceasing production in 2013 after 13 years of dominating the gaming scene. Its best selling game was, unsurprisingly, 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas'. It's a console that people enjoy to this day.
