Following the exciting unveiling of the PlayStation 5 recently, there are further details trickling out since the conference, including that there will be two separate consoles for fans to choose from. One with a disc drive and one without.
This is the only distinction between the two consoles it must be said as the specs for both are the same.
As more and more people are starting to digitally download their games, 66 percent of games sold were digital downloads to be exact, Sony are trying to align their customers’ priorities with their next generation console.
Sony believe that this trend is here to stay and was not just purely due to the lockdown.
"As you saw, there is a small difference in the form factor of the two consoles," PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan told CNET. "I'm sure you also observed, the basic design aesthetic is consistent between them. So there is that and the fact that the digital edition does not have a disk drive. That is it. Other than that, they are identical products."
The bonus of the version that includes the disc drive allows for backwards compatibility with PS4 discs too. Definitely a useful feature for most fans that will want to make the move to the PS5 as soon as possible as they will also be able to carry on with their games from the previous gen.
There is added speculation that the digital edition of the PS5 will most likely cost less, but how much less is unknown for now as the exact release dates and prices have not yet been announced.
The design of the console has gotten a lot of attention for the wrong reasons with many comparing it to their Wi-Fi router. Whether or not you are a fan of its aesthetic, Ryan has said that they were aiming for a futuristic look, looking forward into the new decade of gaming.
The main decider for most fans looking to make the switch to the new console will most likely be the price difference, as both consoles are near enough identical.
There is not much longer to wait now for PlayStation fans with the rumoured release date to be towards the end of this year.
