Jose Mourinho has given his backing to Tottenham Hotspur's plans to sign Thiago Silva, according to The Sun.

The Brazilian defender has been a pillar of the modern game but is now 35 years of age. With that in mind, it’s probably unsurprising that PSG are willing to let him go for absolutely nothing.

Sources told the outlet that interest in the player continues to grow and the centre-back is likely to have his choice of clubs once his deal in Paris expires.

It might well be a difficult decision for Silva who could be appealed to a number of clubs due to a variety of factors.

Tottenham will certainly be keen to improve their defence with Jan Vertonghen all-but certain to move on this summer.

That means that there's a gap for an experienced defender in Mourinho's back line.

The Spurs boss is a well-known admirer of the Brazilian, and it seems that he'll be doing all that he can to convince Daniel Levy to splash out on the defender.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would be some signing if Tottenham Hotspur could pull it off.

Thiago Silva is one of the most decorated defenders of this generation and is a player who many youngsters around the world look up to.

Okay, he's 35 and his best years are behind him but the Brazilian certainly has a lot to offer.

There's no doubt that he would be a wonderful addition for any club in the Premier League - particularly one like Spurs who have aspirations of establishing themselves as title contenders.

Whether they will be able to afford a player such as Thiago Silva remains to be seen, but it would be quite something if they could pull it off.
