Marcus Rashford has forced the government into a major U-turn after a campaign to give children free school meals over the summer holidays.

The Manchester United and England striker has been urging MPs to "Make the U-turn" after the Conservative government announced that it would end free school meal vouchers during the holidays.

And, on Tuesday, Rashford got his wish, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson changed his mind.

It means that children who are currently receiving free school meals will continue to do so; the government will spend £120 million on the Summer Food Fund, per Sky Sports.

Rashford had previously written an emotional, brutally honest, open letter to MPs, insisting that he only rose out of poverty due to the hard work and love of his mum, and pleading for them to put politics aside and find their humanity.

The official spokesman of the PM said, per Sky Sports: "Owing to the coronavirus pandemic the Prime Minister fully understands that children and parents face an entirely unprecedented situation over the summer.

"To reflect this we will be providing a Covid Summer Food Fund.

"This will provide food vouchers covering the six-week holiday period.

"This is a specific measure to reflect the unique circumstances of the pandemic.

"The scheme will not continue beyond the summer and those eligible will be those who already qualify for free school meals."

Rashford responded on Twitter, writing: "I don't even know what to say.

"Just look at what we can do when we come together. THIS is England in 2020."

The Department For Education had initially said it would not reverse the original decision but Rashford's relentless campaigning appears to have changed their thinking; he has 2.8 million followers on Twitter, and his name, plus the hashtag #MaketheUturn, have trended for some days.

GIVEMESPORT'S Harry Sherlock says...

This is a truly wonderful victory for Rashford.

He has used his platform for genuine good and now, thanks to him, more bellies will be full, and more mouths will be fed.

It is an incredible example to set and the striker has managed to transcend any club rivalries to become one of the most revered sportsmen in the country.

Footballers are often said to be role models and are put on a pedestal because of it, and that is only down to their footballing ability.

When it comes to Rashford, he appears to be a genuinely brilliant human being, and has become something of a hero during lockdown.

If the Sports Personality of the Year award wasn't already sewn up, it certainly is now.
