Southampton manager Nigel Adkins lauded his players following the 2-0 win over Charlton which saw his team edge closer to the automatic promotion places.
Guly Do Prado opened the scoring with a composed finish in the 10th minute before Lee Barnard wrapped up the points in the second half with his second goal in as many games.
Adkins said: "I thought we started extremely well and passed the ball extremely well. We scored a couple of excellent goals and I was looking for us to go on and get a few more."
He added: "The supporters really got behind the players. Sometimes we are going to have to be patient and break teams down but we were excellent.
"We have got to keep chipping away and win the games we have got in hand, take it one game at a time and see where it takes us.
"The lads have worked extremely hard and given a good performance for the supporters without being troubled really. We have got one or two players who have niggles but we have a really strong squad who are all pulling in the same direction.
"Dale Stephens got a nasty kick to his Achilles that is why he has come off the field but we are going to get knocks and bumps but we have got a group of players that can all contribute and we can deal with that."
Charlton manager Chris Powell admitted his side were beaten by the better team on the night.
He said: "We were beaten by a good team that are flying. You need to make a good start when you come to a place like this and we did have some little passages of play but they scored 10 minutes in and that is a mountain to climb.
"We did have one or two moments but we were beaten by a better team."
