It's all doom and gloom for Arsenal fans right now.

Despite the fact the Gunners have played just one game since the Premier League's restart, the club is already in a very sticky situation.

Not only were Mikel Arteta's side beaten 3-0 by Manchester City on Wednesday evening, but they lost both Pablo Mari and Granit Xhaka to injury.

A woeful cameo from David Luiz didn't exactly help matters, while the absence of Mesut Ozil from the 20-man match day squad raised a lot of eyebrows.

Arteta has since confirmed that there is no bad feeling between him and the German playmaker, but something must be up if a player on £350,000-a-week is left at home when fully fit.

It now equates to the simple fact that Ozil's current contract with the Gunners is one of the worst from a club's perspective in Premier League history.

You can view a breakdown of just how much the German has cost Arsenal this season below, per Daily Mail.

The stats being used are from all competitions, not just the Premier League.

Ozil in action
  • £15.75m in wages since the start of the season (Aug 11)
  • £15.75m per goal scored (1 goal)
  • £5.25m per assist (3 assists)
  • £14,986 per pass (1051 passes completed)
  • £787,500 per tackle (20 tackles made)
  • £656,250 per dribble (24 dribbles completed)
  • £302,884 per chance created (52 chances created)
  • £8,692 per minute played
  • £8,003 per minute Arsenal have played when Ozil hasn't been involved
Ozil warms up

The numbers are ridiculous, especially when you factor in the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ozil initially started brightly under Arteta, but the latest fiasco surrounding the former Real Madrid man sheds yet more light on the disastrous decision to extend his contract.

Of course, hindsight is a wonderful thing in this scenario. Prior to Ozil signing a new deal, Arsenal fans were livid at the thought of the World Cup winner departing the club.

It's sadly the polar opposite now and you feel there is little to no chance of the 31-year-old resurrecting his career in north London.
