Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has been criticised by both Patrice Evra and Roy Keane following the club’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, per Sky Sports’ live coverage of the game.

Spurs took the lead through Steven Bergwijn against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men but were unable to see the game out.

Eric Dier conceded a penalty with 10 minutes left, bundling Paul Pogba over after the France international beat him on the edge of the box with an impressive piece of skill.

However, former United players Evra and Keane, working on the game as pundits for Sky Sports, both criticised Winks for watching on as the Spurs centre-back was skinned by United’s World Cup winner.

Evra said: “I’m complaining as well about the number eight, Winks, because he just looks at Dier being destroyed.

“He looks like he’s waiting for a cup of tea.

"He needs to close Paul (down), because he’s guessing, he’s guessing that Paul won’t beat Dier. And that’s the problem with modern footballers, they always guess.”

Keane agreed with Evra’s sentiments, insisting that he had to anticipate the situation better.

He said: “Winks has to be back in there. As poor as Dier was, Winks is just watching. He might as well have sat with us.

“Winks has got to get in and smell the danger and expect his mate to get beaten. If you see Winks at the end there, he’s just strolling. Smell the danger, help your team-mate out.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Both of the ex-United players are spot on.

Winks did exactly what both of them said; he simply stood and observed as Pogba skipped past Dier and drew a foul.

Had the midfielder got back to cover, perhaps he could have halted the Frenchman’s momentum and made a tackle, but he allowed Dier to be beaten and then make a mistake in trying to correct it.

If Winks had assumed that his team-mate would get beaten – it is a sensible assumption – he could have intercepted Pogba’s run.

This as much his fault as his England team-mate’s.
