The top 20 clubs in Europe right now, according to UEFA (10-1)

10. Arsenal

A surprise entry in 10th place, last season’s beaten Europa League finalists Arsenal haven’t played Champions League football since the 2016-17 campaign.

9. Manchester United

Winners of the 2016-17 Europa League and Champions League quarter-finalists last season, Manchester United may not be the formidable force they once were, but they’re still rated pretty highly based on UEFA’s coefficient stats.

8. Liverpool

No, your eyes are not deceiving you: Liverpool really are in eighth place. It just looks wrong, doesn’t it?

After winning last season’s Champions League and finishing as runners-up the year before that - oh, and they finished runners-up in the 2015-16 Europa League - it seems mad that the Reds are this low down this list.

7. Paris Saint-Germain

Regulars in the Champions League knockout rounds, PSG always seem to fail when the pressure’s on. The French side are desperate to win the European Cup for the first time in this history - will this year finally be their year?

6. Manchester City

Like PSG, Manchester City are also desperate to win their maiden Champions League title. After defeating Real Madrid 2-1 at the Bernabeu in their Round of 16 first leg, Pep Guardiola’s side have a great chance of going all the way this season.

5. Juventus

Juventus have dominated Italian football since 2012 but they’re still seeking their first Champions League title since 1996. With Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks, you wouldn’t bet against them ending that long wait within the next year or two.

4. Bayern Munich

The five-time European champions last lifted the Champions League trophy in 2013 but are always there or thereabouts in each season.

3. Barcelona

Barcelona haven’t won the Champions League since 2015, but they’ve reached the quarter-final stage of Europe’s premier competition every year since 2007 - that’s some record.

2. Atletico Madrid

In second place, it’s Atletico, Champions League finalists in 2014 and 2016. Diego Simeone’s side also reached the final in 2017 and won the Europa League a year later.

1. Real Madrid

But in first place, surprise surprise, it’s Real Madrid, European football’s most successful team by a distance. Winners of the Champions League in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018, it’s no surprise to see Los Blancos top of the pile.

They remain, at least in UEFA’s eyes, the best team on the continent.
