Wayne Rooney thinks Liverpool could dominate like Manchester United did

It’s just a matter of time before Liverpool are crowned Premier League champions for the first time in their history.

Jurgen Klopp’s side need two more wins to guarantee the title. If things go to plan, that will be against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

It’s been 30 long years since Liverpool last won a league title. But is this title win just the start or simply a one-off?

Well, according to Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, he believes his former rivals can dominate domestically just like United did.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils won five Premier League titles in seven seasons between 2006 and 2013 and Rooney think that's some Liverpool can emulate under Klopp.

"Klopp says it’s impossible for any club to dominate like United once did but he is wrong. There’s a simple way for Liverpool: let Klopp go on and on,” Rooney wrote in his column for The Times.

“United dominated because Fergie stayed so long. I think if Klopp, who is only 53, stayed at Anfield for the next ten years Liverpool would win at least five Premier League titles.

“He could keep building great sides because, as I mentioned, players join clubs to work with managers as good as him. On the flipside, players stay at clubs because of managers, too.

"And if Klopp left it would be no surprise to see the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino also deciding to move on. If I were one of Liverpool’s owners, I would be doing everything in my power to tie him down for many years.

“When Liverpool become champions it will be their 19th league title. A twentieth would draw them level with United and I expect that to drive on Klopp. Given where Liverpool were when he arrived, if he can be the man to propel them past United’s total that would be some legacy.”

They’ve got a long way to go to reach United’s tally of 13 Premier League titles but first, they will be looking to establish themselves as the most successful side in England once again.
