Middlesbrough are eyeing up a move for Duncan Watmore this summer, according to Alan Nixon of The Sun.

The 26-year-old is available on a free transfer this summer after Sunderland made the decision not to offer him a new contract.

Watmore has had a tough time with injuries in recent seasons, and it seems that a fresh start could benefit both player and club on this occasion.

For Middlesbrough, it's likely to be a summer of change.

Several players are out of contract this summer and that means that a move for a winger could be a priority.

Another position that could require attention is in defence, with Daniel Ayala set to leave the club at the end of his contract.

After links with Leeds United, Nixon says that Ayala could be heading to Spain, with the Sunderland man one of those entering the Riverside Stadium.

He tweeted: "Middlesbrough. Ayala has an interest in going back to Spain in summer.

"Could be snapping up Watmore from Sunderland after he was freed."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Duncan Watmore is hardly a signing that will inspire confidence among the Middlesbrough fans.

While few can doubt his talent, the problems that he's had with fitness over the last couple of years could make this move something of a gamble.

It seems odd that Watmore is not good enough for a team in League One, yet is being lined up for a move to a side who are underperforming massively in the Championship.

With Daniel Ayala heading out and Watmore coming in, it seems like a worrying time for Middlesbrough as they continue to battle against the drop in the second tier.
