Richarlison did his best to wind up Liverpool before the Merseyside Derby on Sunday night. The Brazilian forward has arguably been Everton's best player this season and made a point of arguing that Virgil van Dijk was not who he considered to be one of the world's best defenders."People talk a lot about him [Van Dijk], yes he is a great defender but I’ve already dribbled past him," the former Watford striker explained in an interview with Desimpedidos, per the Mirror."He was chosen as one of the top three in the world as he had an excellent season. But yes, for me there are better defenders."Richarlison was then asked to name three defenders that he considered to be better than Van Dijk, to which he responded: "Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Sergio Ramos."

Everton 0-0 Liverpool

So, it certainly isn't a good look for Richarlison that Van Dijk was able to keep a clean sheet at Goodison Park once again during the two Merseyside teams' 0-0 draw in the Premier League.

That being said, Everton had the better chances to win the game with Dominic Calvert-Lewin forcing a superb save from Alisson Becker, before Tom Davies struck the post with a rebound effort.

But Richarlison could have fired Everton into the lead before that particular moment of carnage unfolded, doing well to break beyond Liverpool's back-line on the right wing.

Fake crowd celebrates Richarlison miss

However, with Van Dijk - of all people - snapping at his heels, Richarlison completely fluffed his lines by firing the shot woefully into the empty row Z of the Gwladys Street End.

Had there been fans taking their seats at Goodison Park when Richarlison wound up for that particular shot, you can bet that at least one of them would have anticipated a goal.

But that was still the case even without the fans because Richarlison's miss provoked an amusing moment from the in-stadium audio system that appeared to think he had scored.

It seemed as though the person in charge of sound effects accidentally pressed the 'crowd cheer' button as Richarlison dropped the clanger, only to hastily amend the error with the correct audio.

Check out the amusing video down below:

Ah yes, we all lose our minds when a player wallops a one-on-one into the terraces.

It's been strange getting used to crowd noises during Premier League games when there aren't crowds to generate them and for the most part, the new sounds effects have been used very well.

But on this particular occasion, it's clear that whoever was in charge had a little more faith in Richarlison than most and was convinced that he'd fired the ball past Alisson.

In the end, though, all Richarlison has to go home to are Twitter mentions full of people mocking him for a goal that never was.
