Leeds United's loan move for Jean-Kevin Augustin was seen as something of a coup.

But with a decision due on a permanent switch, Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post believes that the move is far from done.

The striker arrived on loan from RB Leipzig in the January transfer window and was tipped to make a big impression at Elland Road.

However the 23-year-old has been limited to just three cameo appearances since moving to West Yorkshire.

According to The Athletic, Leeds United agreed to a mandatory purchase of the player should they secure promotion to the top flight - something which appears to be more than likely.

That move to bring Augustin to the club permanently would cost around £18million, while a mandatory agreement will see Helder Costa join the club for £15million.

But while that deal for Costa is set in stone, the Yorkshire Evening post writer has claimed that the club still have a big decision to make on the frontman.

Writing for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Smyth: "(Helder) Costa is an obligation so I don’t really see any way out of that one.

"He will become a Leeds United player.

"What I will say on the winger is that he has definitely improved his performances this season over time, and with another Bielsa pre-season probably still has the capacity to improve again.

"As for Jean-Kevin Augustin, the jury is very much out.

"He either gets fit, proves he can remain fit and handle the demands of Bielsa ball and all parties are delighted with the outcome so he stays, or that move won’t happen.

"He has to be happy in order to stay and if it was made clear that he wasn’t going to be featuring, he wouldn’t be happy to stay."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Jean-Kevin Augustin has been a huge disappointment for Leeds United.

Three appearances for a player who was so highly-rated is hugely disappointing, particularly given the role that he could have played.

Augustin just hasn't been fit and that's been a big problem.

If the Whites had their way, they would send the striker back to RB Leipzig this summer and never look back, but with a mandatory purchase all-but agreed it seems that this could be tricky.

What the future holds for the 23-year-old remains to be seen, but he faces a long road back if he's to prove himself at Elland Road.
