Just hearing the name Crash Bandicoot will bring up great memories for a lot of people.

The nostalgic gaming series is set to have an addition to its games with Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time to be released by gaming developers Toys for Bob – the company that led the development of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

Before its release, TheGamer has ranked every game in the series from worst to best, so let’s take a look at the rankings.

16. Crash Boom Bang!

One of the series had to be ranked worst, and by the sounds of it, it was not a hard choice. A poor attempt at creating a fun game with “glitches and half-baked mini games” results in last place for this game. It may be safe to say: Don’t play this game.

15. Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto’s Rampage

A cross-over between Crash and Spyro was a game that fans had wanted for PS1. However, not this one. A poorly-executed game with really bad gameplay and pointless mini-games left “many people pretending that it never happened in the first place”.

14. Crash: Mind Over Mutant

TheGamer describe this game as not “nearly as fun or inventive” as its prequel Crash of the Titans, and therefore not as successful. Activision tried to do something different with an “open-world formula” but it did not come off.

13. Crash Tag Team Racing

Soon after Mario Kart Double Dash came to game consoles, Activision created a “pretty blatant rip-off” with this game. TheGamer state that it's “hard to recommend when there are better racing games with Crash in it”. This is just one reason why it ranks lowly in the franchise.

12. Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex

Up to now, the games have been pretty low-standard. However, there’s hope from here onwards. Although “not a great game”, it has a couple good ideas for a Crash game, but not a lot. Also a downside to this game is that characters were given different looks for this game, and “something about them just isn’t right”. Fans just wanted a classic look from characters.

11. Crash Bash

A big name of the series that has been ranked lower than people’s expectations. A great party format for gamers to enjoy mini-games instead of a storyline. However, it is said to be short-lived and that the fun is only temporary, with some of the games not even having that enjoyment factor.

10. Crash of the Titans

The top 10. There are promising signs from this point in the list. This Crash game is another that redesigns character looks – notably with Crash Bandicoot having arm tattoos (???). This is more of an action game, battling ‘Titans’ among other enemies. A fun game, but not one that challenges top spots in this list.

9. Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced

In 2003, N-Tranced was introduced into the gaming world. New villain Uka Uka and unique gameplay for Nintendo Game Boy Advance benefits this more structured Crash game. This game also got praise for “solid visuals for the game”.

8. Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure

The “best Crash game on a handheld device” ranks in eighth on this list. Retaining a classic Crash Bandicoot feel with visuals and sound design creates a familiar environment for gamers. This is a much better standard than the previous games in the list, and was a good marker for where the series was at in the early 2000s being very successful on Game Boy.

7. Crash Twinsanity

A fun game with a different gameplay concept saw Crash and Cortex, Crash’s main villain, work together instead of fighting each other. It’s described as a fun game by TheGamer, with positives about interesting fights and sound ideas. The only drawback from this game is a high amount of glitches found.

6. Crash Nitro Kart

A fun racing game for gamers that expanded on this game’s prequel of Crash Team Racing. It didn’t dethrone this part of the series in the rankings, but just outside the top five Crash Bandicoot games is a strong position to be in. This was introduced shortly after PS2s were introduced to the world, so visual gameplay was improved emphatically.

5. Crash Bandicoot

The original game that started it all. It has to rank amongst the top games, right? A “ridiculous” storyline with fun gameplay and a cool main character is all this game needed to be great. This debut was a huge success, allowing all of the other games on the list to be possible.

4. Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy

This is the latest game in the series and is ranked higher than the original – it must be good. The game was developed to include the original looks, the classic looks that everyone remembers about Crash Bandicoot. This was huge for the game to be as successful as it was, and brings hope for the highly-anticipated release of Crash Bandicoot 4.

3. Crash Team Racing

After being inspired by the success of Mario Kart, game developers Naughty Dog decided to create their own version. While it is a “bit of a rip-off”, it’s still a great game to play. It’s easy to play and gives gamers something that is very enjoyable.

2. Crash Bandicoot: Warped

Missing out on top spot is Warped, but not by much. A great game with exciting gameplay taking Crash through different time-periods to defeat different bosses. Along with a “beautiful visual style”, the game has an enjoyment factor more than most if not all on this list.

1. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

The best game from the Crash Bandicoot series. The second game of the whole franchise takes top spot in the rankings. The detail and depth in the game allows gamers to get lost, with challenges that gamers want to achieve. The best storyline throughout along with good missions and hidden gems leaves TheGamer ranking it in no. 1 spot.

And there we have it. A big list from a successful franchise with more to be added.

Only time will tell where the new game will sit in these rankings. However, the release will be welcomed by gamers who have waited 20 years for the sequel to the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy.
