It's set to be a busy old summer for Sunderland.
The Black Cats could have a drastically different looking squad when the new season resumes as the club look to prepare for a third season in League One.
According to The Sunderland Echo, the Wearsiders will not be offering contracts to five first team players.
They are Kyle Lafferty, Duncan Watmore, Joel Lynch, Alim Ozturk, Jack Baldwin and Ethan Robson.
In addition, Antoine Semenyo, Bailey Wright and Declan John have returned to their parent clubs after their loan spells.
With Jon McLaughlin also leaving the club after agreeing a move to Rangers, it means that the Black Cats have a desperate need to add to their squad.
Signing a goalkeeper will no doubt be a priority for Phil Parkinson, and according to Alan Nixon of The Sun, they may have found their man.
It's claimed that Sunderland are interested in a move for Ben Alnwick.
The 33-year-old is a free agent after leaving Bolton Wanderers in December.
The stopper has been without a club since then, but is keen to secure a deal ahead of the new football season.
Alnwick started his career with Sunderland before enjoying spells with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Charlton Athletic, Peterborough United and Bolton.
It was there that he met current Sunderland boss Parkinson during their time together with the Trotters, and that means that a reunion could be on the cards.
Asked about the link, Nixon tweeted: "He's one on the radar."
GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...
This is certainly a move that has legs.
Sunderland are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this summer following Jon McLaughlin's move to Glasgow Rangers.
McLaughlin's exit looked to have been on the cards for a while now, meaning that the Black Cats will have already been assessing potential options.
Ben Alnwick certainly fits the bill.
A free agent, the experienced stopper has a strong track record in the EFL and would provide good competition for Lee Burge.
As well as that, Alnwick knows manager Phil Parkinson well from their time together at Bolton Wanderers.
Whether that proves to be a big pull for the goalkeeper remains to be seen, but it's certainly one that we could see develop over the coming weeks.
