David Luiz has signed a new one-year contract at Arsenal, according to reports. It appeared the defender's Arsenal career was over when he produced a shocking substitute performance in his side's first match back from the coronavirus pandemic against Manchester City.Luiz came off the bench and was at fault for the opener against Raheem Sterling. Then, in the second half, he hauled back Riyad Mahrez and was subsequently sent off.Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher, suggested that it was the last time we'd see Luiz in an Arsenal shirt with his contract set to expire at the end of the season."After a performance like that, l don't see how Mikel Arteta can put him back in under any circumstances," Carragher said."It is unbelievable in some ways that he has kidded so many people in football. There is only one manager who I can think of who has got the best from David Luiz and that is Antonio Conte when he played him in the middle of a back three."

However, with fellow defender Pablo Mari sustaining an injury in that City match, Arsenal have decided to keep Luiz for a little longer.

Incidentally, the Gunners are keen to sign Mari on a permanent deal worth around £13.5 million. But the Spaniard is set to be sidelined for three months which is probably why Mikel Arteta has decided he can't afford to lose Luiz.
