Tottenham Hotspur's clash with West Ham United was marred by controversy on Tuesday night.

Despite the North London side coming away with a 2-0 victory, the major calls made by VAR were what will steal the headlines.

Tomas Coucek was unfortunate to score an own goal to give Spurs the lead, with a suspected handball waved away after an appeal to VAR.

Harry Kane doubled the lead with a well-taken effort in the second period, but arguably the most controversial call came in the first period.

It was a cagey half of football where neither side really looked like taking advantage - at least until a couple of minutes before half-time.

A fine pass from Giovani Lo Celso found Son Heung-min who cut inside Ryan Fredericks before unleashing a lethal effort into the bottom corner.

Tottenham disappeared to celebrate, but the referee chose to check the effort for any violations.

It then emerged that Son was offside and that the goal wouldn't stand.

Jose Mourinho and the Spurs team were outraged by the decision, but speaking during the half-time interval, Jamie Redknapp cast his eye over the decision and said that the referee was correct to make the call that he did.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “It was just offside.

“Lo Celso injects a bit of pace into the game, he gets the ball to Son and it’s a brilliant finish but he’s offside.

“VAR drives a lot of people mad – they want to see more goals, but this is why it’s been brought in.

“It’s the right decision.

“There’s been a couple like (Roberto) Firmino against Aston Villa and Teemu Pukki against Spurs earlier this season where his shoulder was offside – that drives me crazy.

“The facts are if Son gets himself back onside it’s a goal.

“He doesn’t work hard enough to get back. He can see along the line – he has a great view.

“It’s a fraction of an inch but he’s offside.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

While Tottenham Hotspur were undoubtedly frustrated, it was the correct decision.

Son Heung-min was a whisker offside as the ball from Giovani Lo Celso came in to him, meaning that it was right to be chalked off.

It was a shame to see the goal ruled out given the quality of the strike, but all things considered it was correct.
