Leicester City could be readying to play Champions League football next season.

The Foxes are currently third in the Premier League, four points clear of fourth-placed Chelsea.

They are also nine points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United so one must assume that European football will be returning to the King Power Stadium next term.

That is despite their results following the resumption of play in the top-flight; they have drawn with both Watford and Brighton & Hove Albion.

And reports claim that they are ready to invest in the squad this summer.

Indeed, William Carvalho, the Real Betis midfielder, is touted as a possible target in the upcoming transfer window.

The Portugal international is said be a player wanted by Brendan Rodgers’ team, and Betis have set an asking price for the midfield destroyer.

The Spanish club want €30m (£27.1m) for the 28-year-old because of a sell-on clause they agreed with Sporting Lisbon when they signed him in 2018.

Indeed, the Portuguese club would be due 25% of the fee, meaning that they would pocket €7.5m (£6.7m) if the transfer goes through.

That, subsequently, has raised Sporting's valuation as the Foxes circle.

GIVEMESPORT'S Harry Sherlock says…

Leicester should pay this.

They are remarkably proactive, as a club, when it comes to potentially losing players and signing Carvalho would have a twofold effect.

Firstly, it would improve their squad and allow them to bring in a midfielder of Champions League quality; Carvalho has had injury problems this season, making nine appearances in La Liga, but he has shown previously that he can be a key asset for club and country.

He has won 59 caps for Portugal.

And secondly, it would ensure that Wilfred Ndidi’s potential exit is covered.

The current defensive midfielder was signed after N’Golo Kante’s exit but, this time, it appears as though the replacement is coming in before the incumbent has left and that is smart business.

Ndidi has been linked with Manchester United and PSG; Leicester taking these steps is just good sense.
