Newcastle United were back in action on Tuesday.
The Magpies took on Aston Villa at St James’ Park but were unable to take all three points against Dean Smith’s men.
Dwight Gayle gave the Magpies the lead, his very first goal of the Premier League season.
Indeed, it was only a 23-minute cameo for the striker, as he came off the bench to hand Steve Bruce’s men a precious lead.
However, Ahmed Elmohamady equalised for Villa in the closing stages, handing them a vital point as they look to avoid the drop, and denting the Magpies’ hopes of recording a top-10 finish.

Bruce delighted with Gayle and Carroll
Bruce, of course, took a number of questions after the game and he took the time to hail his strikers, Andy Carroll and goalscorer Gayle.
The latter scored his first goal in two years at St James’ Park, with his last coming against Chelsea in May 2018, per The Northern Echo, and Bruce is hopeful that both he and Carroll, who also came off the bench to play a part in the draw, will stay fit for the remainder of the season.
He said: “All of the squad are going to be important because we’re going to pick up a few niggles.
“It’s great to have the two of them available.
“I’ve said all along with Dwight, week after week, that it would be great to have him back fit. It’s exactly the same with Andy.
“They’ve both been plagued, but hopefully the three months off has done them the world of good. I was delighted with the way they linked up. All through his career, we’ve always known Dwight was a goalscorer. I’m pleased for him tonight.”
Injury woes
Newcastle’s point was not earned without injury.
Both Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie started the game against Villa and both were withdrawn by Bruce.
And the club’s official Twitter account has confirmed that they have both sustained injuries.
The tweet claims that they are soft tissue injuries, and they will be assessed as the Magpies prepare for a clash with Manchester City this weekend.
Saint-Maximin hailed
Allan Saint-Maximin played the 90 minutes on the left flank for the Magpies and he certainly drew a few admiring glances for his performance.
BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage was impressed with his display, insisting that he was the start of the show for the Magpies.
Saint-Maximin was also in excellent form against Sheffield United last time out, scoring versus the Blades, and Savage enjoyed his performance.
Per Chronicle Live, he said: “That first half, he was positive, every time he gets the ball, in commentary, I was looking forward to what he was going to do.
“Taking risks in that final third, driving at the defenders.”
