Leeds haven't had the most ideal starts following the resumption of the Championship.

A 2-0 defeat against Cardiff put them second in the table on goal difference while injuries have wreaked havoc.

Jean-Kevin Augustin and Pablo Hernandez still aren't fit while Tyler Roberts was suffering from cramp against the Bluebirds.

On the pitch and at the training ground, things haven't been going too well, that's despite a series of contract updates.

Ben White sealed terms until the end of the season, as too did Gaetano Berardi. Yet, it feels like the future of Leeds' defence is very much up in the air.

That could have been cured with the addition of two signings. Juan Foyth has been linked with a loan switch in recent while another defender at the centre of their attention was Daniel Ayala.

However, both transfers have now been well and truly ruled out.

Ayala

Phil Hay claimed at the weekend that Leeds weren't in the running for the pair of defenders but now it's been revealed that Ayala was actually offered to the Whites.

That's courtesy of the Mirror who suggest the player's agent contacted Victor Orta to discuss a potential transfer.

The duo know each other well from Orta's days at Boro but after being gifted a golden opportunity to sign him, Leeds' Director of Football turned it down and rejected Ayala.

Ayala

The 29-year-old is out of contract next month and is searching for a new home. It doesn't look as though it'll be in Yorkshire, however.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

The Spaniard has been a Championship stalwart down the years, playing a massive 216 games at that level.

His impact has been so significant that Tony Pulis went as far as to hail him 'fantastic' when he was in charge of Boro, praising the impact he had in the centre of defence.

However, it must be stated that Ayala simply isn't a player Marcelo Bielsa would get on with.

He may be incredibly dangerous in the air, standing at 6 foot 3 and winning 3.9 aerial duels per match, but with the ball at his feet, he struggles.

The former Liverpool man has only completed 73.4% of his passes in 2019/20, a tally that's some way off the ball-playing White.

In comparison, the Brighton loanee has registered a pass success rate of 85.3%, thriving in a side that likes to play out from the back.

On this evidence, it's just as well Orta rejected the chance to sign Ayala.
