Newcastle United's takeover bid has taken a fresh twist.

Supporters of the Magpies are waiting with bated breath after news broke two months ago about a prospective £300million deal to buy the club.

Amanda Staveley is the figurehead of the Saudi-backed consortium who are said to be leading the charge for the club, but so far there’s been no news of a confirmed deal.

The club are currently waiting on a verdict from the Premier League as to whether the £300million deal can go ahead.

David and Simon Reuben are among the investors involved in the potential takeover, however the brothers look to be hedging their bets as they also eye up a move for Major League Baseball side, the New York Jets.

According to The Chronicle, the Mets are struggling for cash after losing $50million per season on player wages, meaning that the club could be available for a cut-price fee.

A report in Variety, as quoted by the Chronicle, said: "David and Simon Reuben, who amassed a fortune investing in real estate, technology companies and leisure, are exploring a bid for the New York Mets, people familiar with the matter told Sportico.

"The brothers, who were born in India and moved to London as teenagers, have a combined net worth of about $14 billion — built on one of the largest portfolios of retail, office and residential properties.

"The brothers are likely drawn to the team because of the real estate development possibilities around Citi Field, said one of the people, who was granted anonymity because the matter is private.

"The Mets have retained Allen & Co. to oversee the sale process. Allen & Co. declined to comment. An email sent to Reuben Brothers in London wasn’t immediately returned.

"The brothers join a growing list of potential bidders for the Mets, who in December said they were in talks to sell up to 80% of the Major League Baseball team to hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen in a deal that valued the club at $2.6 billion. That deal fell apart."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

While this is a fresh twist, I don't think it's anything that Newcastle United fans should be too worried about.

As serial investors, it's only natural that David and Simon Reuben will be weighing up opportunities around the world, and the situation with the New York Jets fits into that category.

This shouldn't have any impact on the Newcastle United deal.

A decision is due from the Premier League in the coming days and it'll be interesting to see what the outcome will be.

One thing we do know is that supporters will be praying that a deal goes through.
