Crystal Palace were well beaten on Wednesday night.
Roy Hodgson’s side went to Anfield to take on champions-elect Liverpool and were thumped 4-0.
Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, and Sadio Mane ultimately sealed the Reds’ triumph, denting Palace’s hopes of securing European qualification in the process.
Palace are currently ninth in the Premier League, three points off seventh-placed, but were outclassed on the night.
Eagles boss Roy Hodgson selected Gary Cahill and Mamadou Sakho as his starting defenders in Merseyside, with the latter taking on his former club.
The centre-back moved to Selhurst Park in 2017 for a fee of £26 million and has become something of a star during his time in south London.
The Frenchman has made a total of 64 appearances for Palace throughout his time at the club, scoring one goal and registering two assists.
He has struggled with injuries this season, though, making just seven Premier League starts, and The Athletic now reports that there is the possibility that he could leave the club in the coming transfer window.
The report states that Lyon are interested in signing Sakho, but a deal has yet to be agreed.
He would cost considerably more than a £4.5m fee that has been reported, per The Athletic, and Palace would not be against the idea of him moving on.
Per Spotrac, he earns £100,000-per-week, but Hodgson has previously favoured Cahill and Scott Dann at centre-back, leaving Sakho looking in through the window.
GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…
Moving Sakho on is a sensible option for Palace.
He earns a fair whack when it comes to his wages and, per Transfermarkt, he is valued at £8.5m.
Signed in 2017, Sakho has won 29 caps for France, but he’s 30, and is not getting any younger.
If there is interest from Lyon, it makes all the sense in the world for the south London club to cash in while his value remains high.
His contract expires in 2021 and it does not make sense for the Eagles to keep him around and let him leave on a free transfer next summer.
Shifting him should be an objective this summer.News Now - Sport News
