Manchester United made a huge mistake with Alexis Sanchez.

The Chile international joined the club in 2018, moving in a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan join Arsenal in part-exchange.

Alexis made a total of 45 appearances for the club before being shipped out on loan to Inter Milan, scoring just five goals and registering nine assists.

It should be noted that the contract he initially signed at United was worth £14 million-per-year after tax, per the BBC. That equates to £269,230-per-week.

That investment has not paid off, though, and he has been spending the season in Serie A.

During his time with Inter, he has made 18 appearances, scoring once, and registering four assists, but even though he has struggled to hit the back of the net, he could well be staying at San Siro.

Indeed, Sky Italia, via Sport Witness, reports that Inter are in conversations with United in order to keep him at the club for the remainder of the season; an agreement must be found by June 30th.

Inter, though, are said to be keen to buy the former Barcelona man but it remains to be seen if a fee can be agreed.

Alexis signed a four-year deal in 2018, meaning he is tied to the club until 2022, and he is valued at £14.4m by Transfermarkt.

That’s a little over a year’s salary for the Chilean.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

United need to wash their hands of Alexis.

His signing has been a genuine disaster; United have invested an awful lot of money in the forward, and simply haven’t seen a proper return.

Mkhitaryan was not really a success at Arsenal either, but United now have a chance to move the 31-year-old on.

It may remain a mystery as to why Inter are actually interested in buying him but United really shouldn’t quibble.

He is unlikely to be in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans going forward and shifting him from their wage bill has to be a priority.
