Glasgow Rangers have been nowhere near the level of Celtic throughout the 2019/20 season.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw the season curtailed but Steven Gerrard’s men ended the campaign a mammoth 13 points behind their bitter Old Firm rivals.

Rangers lost four games throughout the campaign, whereas Celtic lost two, and it feels as though strengthening is needed if they are to end the club’s dominance in 2020/21.

And it looks as though plans for the summer are already afoot.

Per France Football, the club are exploring the possibility of signing Amiens man Bongani Zungu in the coming transfer window.

The defensive midfielder is a South Africa international with 29 caps and joined the French club in 2017.

The 27-year-old began his professional career with University of Pretoria in his native country, before joining to Mamelodi Sundowns and then making the jump to Europe with Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal.

A switch to Amiens came about in 2017 and he could have joined La Liga club Mallorca in January, only for the deal to fall through.

The report states that Rangers have enquired about the possibility of securing Zungu’s signature in the coming window, though they face competition from fellow French club Strasbourg.

He is available for a bargain fee of between €2 million (£1.8m) and €3m (£2.7m).

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Zungu is the archetypal defensive midfielder.

Amiens finished the season in the relegation zone and will subsequently drop into Ligue 2 following the curtailment of the season.

After 28 games, they had recorded just four victories, but Zungu is an assured presence in the centre of the pitch.

In his 21 appearances, 10 of which were starts, he averaged 1.3 tackles per game, 0.8 interceptions, 1.1 fouls, one clearance, and one aerial duel won, per WhoScored.

Amiens may have struggled throughout the campaign, but Zungu has been something of a leading light.

If Rangers can do the deal, at such a cheap price, it would be a step forward ahead of the 2020/21 season.
