There might be a global pandemic right now but there was no stopping Liverpool fans from celebrating their first league title in 30 years.After Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-1 on Thursday, the Reds were crowned Premier League champions for the first ever time.It wasn’t the perfect scenario - that would have been winning the title in front of a packed Anfield - but it’ll do, thank you very much.But if you thought the celebrations would only last one night, you're very much mistaken.Twenty-four hours after Liverpool were confirmed champions, more Liverpool fans gathered in the city to celebrate their success.However, this time, it seems there was more trouble.Videos have emerged of a firework being shot at the famous Liver building in Liverpool, which resulted in it catching fire.The Liverpool Echo quoted Merseyside fire and rescue as saying: “We were alerted to a small fire on a patch of astroturf. Firefighters have dealt with the incident and the fire is now out.”
Merseyside police’s assistant chief constable Jon Roy said: “We understand people want to celebrate Liverpool becoming Premier League champions for the first time in 30 years, and the time will come when fans can celebrate together with the team and applaud their achievement, but now is not that time.
“Please follow the advice of the players, the manager and the club by putting safety first. The club is encouraging fans to share their experiences of watching future games at home with the hashtag #LFCAtHome on social media, and we all look forward to sharing your experiences of celebrating safely.”
Joe Anderson, the mayor of Liverpool, tweeted: “I am really concerned about scenes at Pier Head tonight. I appreciate #LFC fans want to celebrate but please, for your own safety, and that of others, go home and celebrate at home Covid-19 is still a major risk and our city has already lost far too many people to the illness.”
Meanwhile, manager Jurgen Klopp insisted that, although the players can’t celebrate with the fans right now, they will at some time in the future.
“We should give ourselves the opportunity to do so," Klopp said.
"Tell the people 4/5 weeks before, then we decide how good it will be. Nobody can tell us when we celebrate what, we decide that.
“It's too big an achievement to not celebrate it, honestly. With all my power in this club, I will try to make it happen. I'm not sure if I can, but I will try everything and then we can show the best face of this wonderful club and can show it to the whole world."
