Celtic tipped to sign Manchester City winger

Patrick Roberts

Ten titles in a row is the remarkable record Celtic are looking for next season.

After wrapping up the league by 13 points this term, it’s all become rather easy for the Hoops.

However, if they lose the likes of Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard in the summer, it might well become a little more difficult.

The transfer window is sure to be a busy time for Neil Lennon and co who are already trying to retain the services of Fraser Forster and Mohamed Elyounoussi, but he can’t just have his eye on the Southampton duo.

Also emerging from English football could be another signing.

Celtic have been linked for players like Lyndon Dykes and Ivan Toney in recent weeks but it’s a player who’s already played for the club that could re-join.

That’s according to Frank McAvennie who suggested the Bhoys should make a move to re-sign Patrick Roberts from Manchester City once the window opens.

McAvennie was full of praise for Roberts in an interview with Football Insider, detailing why he thought Celtic should be in for the winger.

McAvennie said: “I do not know what is happening with Elyounoussi and if they re-sign him I do not see the need for Roberts.

“The fans would love to see him back though because he was a wonderful player. I wouldn’t rule out bringing him back. He did very well at Celtic and he loved it.

“If he has not got a career elsewhere it would be nice if he returned but I think any move would be reliant on Elyounoussi though.”

Elyounoussi has been linked with a £10m return to Celtic Park once he heads back to Southampton following his loan spell.

The Norwegian has been training with the Hoops but will go back across the border at the end of the month.

GIVEMESPORT’S Matt Dawson says…

Elyounoussi had a bright season with Celtic, scoring seven goals and producing six assists, but like Roberts, endured an injury-hit loan spell with the club.

The number of goals the Norway international was involved in makes him an attractive signing, but the Man City youngster would be a good alternative if they can’t afford him.

Currently valued at £2.5m, he’d presumably be considerably cheaper, and on top of that, has no chance of making a career for himself at City.

Roberts has had two spells away from Manchester this term, first signing for Norwich on loan, before moving to Middlesbrough for a temporary stay in January.

However, he’s scored just once in ten outings across all competitions.

It’s easy to forget, though, what a certain Brendan Rodgers had to say about the 23-year-old.

Aged 19, the winger played under Rodgers at Celtic and he had quite the comparison when describing his first impressions; “Patrick is more a David Silva type, more on the inside. He looks like he has an eye for goal. He’s very young and he looks a talent,” the current Leicester boss explained

Quite the praise indeed, especially for someone who was so young when he first joined Celtic.
