Celtic planning swoop for Premier League stalwart

Celtic's options between the sticks could look incredibly thin for a period of time.

Craig Gordon looks as though he's close to joining Hearts following the conclusion of his contract, while Fraser Forster's future is also up in the air.

The Southampton stopper was on loan last season and is still training with the Hoops, but is set to return to the south coast of England at the end of the month.

Neil Lennon has made it clear that he wants the colossal stopper to return for a fourth spell at Parkhead, but whether the Saints want to let him go again remains to be seen.

However, it does look as though Celtic have contingency plans in place for is Forster doesn't return.

Greek 'keeper Vasilis Barkas has been rumoured with a switch to Celtic Park but is also linked with the likes of Rangers and Leeds, but on Friday evening, a new link emerged.

The Telegraph reported that the Bhoys were considering a goalkeeper currently plying his trade in the Premier League.

That happens to be former England man Joe Hart, a player enduring a rather torrid time in his career.

The report suggests Celtic will move for the 33-year-old if they fail to bring Forster back through the door.

Lennon wants Forster back on another season-long loan deal but Hart is very much on the table should they pursue another option.

Joe Hart

Hart is out of contract at the end of the month and will be free to join on a free transfer.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Hart's career has gone considerably downhill in recent years.

Capped 75 times by his country, he was cast aside by Pep Guardiola when he walked through the doors at Manchester City, but following a loan spell with Torino, has failed to make it at Burnley.

He has played just three times for the Clarets this term so it's no surprise he wants to leave as quickly as possible.

Rather coincidentally, however, Hart is a player who is much loved for Forster himself.

The pair have been on England duty together numerous times and it was during one of their training camps that he held Hart in high esteem.

Forster commented: "For me he is a top keeper in Europe. You look how good his distribution is, how good his shot-stopping is and how he makes big saves at big moments and we are very lucky to have him."

It's easy to forget just how good Hart was during the height of his career with Man City, winning multiple Premier League's and establishing himself as England's number one.

After a troublesome period, Celtic could be where he finds a new home for himself.
