If you want to be a successful team in modern European football, you have to be willing to spend in the transfer market.

Getting the chequebook out is part and parcel of the beautiful game these days and many clubs have gone pretty bonkers with regards to spending since the turn of the century.

In total, 14 clubs across Europe have spent over £1bn on players since the start of the 2000/01 season.

Astonishing, right? Below, we've provided all the data on those 14 teams and the 11 below them in the spending charts.

Unsurprisingly, the Premier League features heavily, with 10 teams making the 25-team list.

All data sourced from Transfermarkt.

25. Aston Villa

Transfers - 375

Amount spent - £633.65m

A surprise first entry, but Villa have spent big in the last year on Wesley, Tyrone Mings, Douglas Luiz and others.

24. Sevilla

Transfers - 305

Amount spent - £651.69m

While Sevilla have never spent £30m+ on a single player, they've still amassed a hefty transfer bill this century.

23. West Ham United

Transfers - 427

Amount spent - £670.03m

The signings of Sebastien Haller and Felipe Anderson in recent years have heavily contributed to the Hammers' total.

22. Lyon

Transfers - 193

Far fewer transfers made than those above and more spent. Lyon certainly haven't been afraid to splash the cash.

21. Newcastle

Transfers - 339

Despite their record purchase being Michael Owen for what felt like an eternity, the Magpies rank high.

20. Borussia Dortmund

Transfers - 189

Amount spent - £753.75m

The masters at selling players for profit have also spent a fair bit down the years. However, Abdou Diallo remains their most expensive purchase at £25m.

19. Valencia

Transfers - 312

Amount spent - £788.19m

Los Che have had to flaunt their wealth at time in the modern era to try and keep up with Spain's big three.

Valencia's Goncalo Guedes

18. Everton

Transfers - 302

Amount spent - £797.64m

The signings of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Richarlison, Romelu Lukaku and Alex Iwobi in recent years have turned the Toffees into one of the biggest spenders in Europe.

17. Napoli

Transfers - 585

Amount spent - £828.00m

The volume of transfers made is key here. Signing Gonzalo Higuain, Hirving Lozano and Konstantinios Manolas for £30m+ helps as well.

16. Bayern Munich

Transfers - 129

Amount spent - £905.27m

Bayern don't turn to the transfer market as often as the other teams on this list. But when they do, they aren't afraid to flex their financial muscle.

15. AS Monaco

Transfers - 420

Amount spent - £940.00m

The signings of Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Joao Moutinho and more in the summer of 2013 make up a hefty chunk of Monaco's spend.

14. Arsenal

Transfers - 317

Amount spent - £1.03bn

Much of Arsenal's spending has come in the last five years, with Nicolas Pepe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Granit Xhaka all signing for £40m+.

13. AS Roma

Transfers - 665

Amount spent - £1.12bn

Like Napoli, the volume of transfers is key here. Gabriel Batistuta's signing in 2000/01 was actually the club's record until Patrik Schick's arrival in 2018/19.

12. Tottenham

Transfers - 407

Amount spent - £1.14bn

Spurs ahead of Arsenal is a tad surprising. Tanguy Ndombele, Davinson Sanchez and Moussa Sissoko are the only players to have cost the club more than £30m.

11. AC Milan

Transfers - 639

Amount spent - £1.20bn

Italian teams make A LOT of transfers. Leonardo Bonucci and Rui Costa are Milan's two most expensive signings to date.
