Jordan Henderson has done what Steven Gerrard couldn’t and win the Premier League title.
The Liverpool captain will be getting his trophy shuffle ready for his trophy lift after his side claimed the title with seven matches still to play.
It completes an incredible turnaround for Henderson and his Liverpool career.
Arriving from Sunderland for £20 million in 2011, Henderson was often forced to play right midfield rather than his natural central position.
A year later, Brendan Rodgers attempted to use him in a swap deal with Clint Dempsey.
However, Henderson refused to leave and decided to prove his manager - and the fans - wrong.
Even his captain at the time, Steven Gerrard, accused him of ‘playing too safe.’
“Sometimes Jordan plays the easy or safe pass when sometimes I think he has got that little bit more in his locker,” Gerrard said, per the Daily Mail.
“He can open a defence up and he has got a decent range of passing but at times I think he does (play it too safe).”
A few years later, Gerrard was handing Henderson the armband as he left for LA Galaxy.
It was an impossible job. Following in the footsteps of the club’s greatest ever player.
Henderson was criticised for, well, not being Gerrard.
But in the last couple of years, he’s proven to be an incredible leader as the Reds have conquered England, Europe and the world.
Now, he’s getting all the plaudits he deserves - and that includes from his former captain.
On Saturday morning, Gerrard took to Instagram to dedicate a post to Henderson.
It read: “Couldn’t of passed it to a better person. Proud of you mate @jhenderson,” accompanying a picture of Gerrard passing the captain’s armband to Henderson.
Beautiful.
Henderson acknowledged the post by replying two heart emojis.
