Leicester City will likely be playing Champions League football next season.

The club are third in the Premier League and, while they are unlikely to catch second-placed Manchester City, they have a significant gap to fifth-placed Manchester United.

Brendan Rodgers’ side, indeed, are currently six points clear of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men and it would take a remarkable turnaround for them to fall out of the European places.

To that end, Rodgers is clearly keeping an eye on next season as he looks to prepare his squad for the rigours of elite European football.

William Carvalho has been identified as a possible target but Sevilla ABC have now given an update on the midfielder’s future, and it is not as clear cut as it may appear.

While the Foxes are indeed said to be interested, and have made the player an offer, they have yet to begin negotiations with Real Betis.

Carvalho has struggled with injuries throughout this season and has played just 10 times for the club in La Liga.

In that time, he has picked up four yellow cards and has yet to provide an assist or score a goal, though that could be forgivable, given his position in defensive midfield.

Carvalho signed a five-year deal when he joined the Spanish club in 2018.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Carvalho is an excellent player but he has struggled with injuries thus far this term.

That could well make a deal all the more achievable as Rodgers looks to improve his squad in the summer.

Previous reports have claimed that Sporting will demand €30 million (£27.2m) for his signature given that there is a sell-on clause owed to the Portuguese club.

Negotiations have yet to begin, though, and it remains to be seen if Rodgers’ men will be able to secure the anchor man’s signature.

Carvalho has made a total of 53 appearances for Betis, after becoming an integral member of Sporting’s squad.

He played a total of 193 appearances for Sporting before his move to Spain.
