Tottenham Hotspur will make signing a defender a top priority this summer.

Jan Vertonghen looks set to end his lengthy stay in North London with speculation suggesting that he's in talks with Roma over a summer move.

While the defender has agreed to extend his stay to the end of the season, his future beyond that is very much in doubt.

That means that for Spurs, they are likely to be looking for a suitable replacement.

But while defenders are no doubts the priority, Jose Mourinho will be determined to strengthen his forward line as well.

If reports are to be believed, a new addition could come sooner rather than later.

According to The Mirror, quoted by The Express, Spurs are closing in on a deal for Lucas Vasquez.

It's claimed that the North London side have been offered a cut-price deal for the winger of £16million plus performance-related add-ons.

Lucas, who currently plays or Real Madrid, has found first team opportunities limited at the Santiago Bernabeu this term, meaning that he's deemed as a dispensable member of Zinedine Zidane's squad.

With just one year remaining on his contract, it's thought that the club are keen to cash in this summer to support the club through the financial uncertainty that has come through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

It's claimed that a number of clubs in both England and Italy have expressed an interest in the 28-year-old, however Spurs are said to be favourites.

This is based on the respect that the winger has for Jose Mourinho following their time working together with the Spanish side.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

What a shrewd addition this would be.

While he's fallen out of favour at Real Madrid, Lucas Vazquez would undoubtedly be a top addition.

The winger is a popular figure due to his work ethic and grounded personality, and given the amount of appearances he's made for the Spanish giants, it's clear that he has quality.

You don't play 201 games for Real Madrid without being a top player.

Signing him for £16million would be a huge coup for Tottenham Hotspur who are keen to strengthen this summer.

Jose Mourinho will be keen to make his mark on the squad and this would be the perfect addition to do that.
