How do you improve this Liverpool side?

Jurgen Klopp felt the answer was ‘you can’t’ last summer as the European champions failed to make a first-team signing.

There are concerns that will be repeated this summer, despite the Reds becoming Premier League champions.

The Reds had been heavily linked with a move for Timo Werner but decided not to make a move for the German, allowing Premier League rivals Chelsea to steal in.

Will that set the tone for the rest of the transfer window?

Well, apparently not because it seems they’re pretty keen to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

Liverpool have faced Koulibaly on four occasions in the last two seasons with Klopp’s side winning just once and scoring just twice. Much of that was down to Koulibaly’s incredible defending.

Unsurprisingly, Napoli are holding out for a record-breaking fee for a defender - £90 million.

It seems incredibly unlikely Liverpool will fork out that amount for a 29-year-old.

However, according to Italian outlet Tuttosport, they have a plan.

They claim that Liverpool are willing to offer Dejan Lovren as part of the deal. The Croatian has only made 10 appearances in the Premier League this season and is behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in the centre-back pecking order.

Quite how much Napoli would value the 30-year-old at is unknown but it’s sure to lower Koulibaly’s £90 million price-tag slightly.

While a deal seems incredibly unlikely, just imagine Van Dijk and Koulibaly at the heart of a defence. They would be impregnable.
