It's set to be an exciting summer for Newcastle United supporters.

While the Premier League are yet to make a decision on the proposed takeover of the club from Amanda Staveley and the Saudi-backed consortium for a sum of £300m, that won't stop them making preparations for the transfer market.

Regardless of who will be running the club, the first team squad needs strengthening and that has to be a priority.

Many names have already been linked with a move, but one could certainly gets fans very excited.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are eyeing a move for former club favourite Laurent Robert's son, Thomas Robert.

The 19-year-old currently plays for Montpellier in France but looks set to be available on a free transfer this summer after rejected the offer of a new contract.

While not yet a first team player, Robert is regarded as a top talent who, like his father, can play on both flanks or in the number 10 position.

As well as Newcastle United, numerous other clubs in the UK, France and Germany have reported made offers to secure his signature.

A key factor in deciding where he will go is the guarantee of first team football, with a lack of opportunities at Montpellier contributing to his decision to leave.

Whether Newcastle United could offer that assurance remains to be seen.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

What a blast from the past this could be.

While Thomas Robert may be something of an unknown quantity to Newcastle United fans, his father Laurent is very well remembered.

The left-footed wonder provided some memorable moments over the years at St James' Park and fans will love to have a reminder of that again.

Obviously that puts a lot of pressure on the young starlet's shoulders, but it could be a fast-track to being a club hero.

But before we get carried away it's important that the club can offer him assurances of first team football, otherwise he will likely choose to move elsewhere.
