Derby County defender Andre Wisdom is in a stable condition in hospital after being assaulted.

The 27-year-old was the victim of an 'unprovoked assault and robbery' in Toxteth, Liverpool, while visiting relatives.

It's thankfully believed that Wisdom will make a full recovery from his injuries and the Merseyside police have launched a full investigation in light of the incident.

Sky Sports reports that as Wisdom drove into the Toxteth/Wavertree area to pick up a family member, he was attacked by a man in the street once he exited the vehicle.

Wisdom was stabbed on multiple occasions and then robbed.

A brief statement from the Rams explained: "The club will focus its efforts on supporting Andre and his family."

The club also confirmed to Sky that the player 'sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.'

The former England U21 international has also played for West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, Red Bull Salzburg and most famously Liverpool throughout his career.

Wisdom turned out 21 times for the Reds, who were crowned Premier League champions last week; scoring on his debut during a 5-3 win against Young Boys in the Europa League.
