Steven Gerrard has been voted the greatest player in Liverpool history.

It's been an incredible week for the Merseyside club as they collected their first ever Premier League trophy and it must have come as a huge relief to the current Rangers manager.

The absence of a league title from Gerrard's trophy cabinet has been well documented over the years, but Jurgen Klopp was keen to dedicate the recent triumph to their former captain.

Klopp told Sky Sports: "It's much more than I ever thought could be possible. Becoming champion with this club is absolutely incredible. Knowing how much Kenny supported us, this is for you too, Kenny.

"We had to wait another 30 years before your club could win. It's for Stevie, who had to wait a long time and now it's for all. You Kenny and the likes of Stevie, the boys admire you."

Gerrard named Liverpool's GOAT

Sure, it might not have been a trophy for him to lift personally, but Gerrard has said in the past that a Liverpool team winning the league would exorcise the demons of 2013/14 in particular.

And now the former England midfielder has even more to celebrate after a poll by talkSPORT found that supporters consider him to be the greatest player to ever pull on a Liverpool jersey.

The vote took place over four groups of four players with the winner of each going into a grand final in which Gerrard emerged victorious with 43.6% of people opining in his favour.

Liverpool's 16 greatest players

So, congratulations to Gerrard first and foremost, but we wanted to make things even more interesting by going through all the voting and ranking the 16 players up for consideration.

We will, of course, rank the top four by how they performed in the final, but we're going to provide a top 16 by running the maths on how many votes each of the 12 runners-up attracted in the groups.

Chit-chat aside then, here are the top 16 greatest players in Liverpool history according to talkSPORT and the fans themselves:

16. Billy Liddell - 147 votes

15. Mohamed Salah - 395 votes

Gerrard vs Dalglish

Talk about tight at the top!

We can all agree that Dalglish and Gerrard are the two finest players to ever turn out for Liverpool, but deciding between them is nearly as impossible as Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo.

So, we'll let you decide whether there's some recency bias in Gerrard's victory, but what we can't leave up to opinion is the bizarre fact that Suarez finished higher than Rush.

I'm sorry, although Suarez was remarkable during the 2013/14 season, there's absolutely no chance he should be finishing above the club's all-time record goalscorer.

And as for Van Dijk being named better than Hughes, Fowler and Souness at this early stage, we'll just have to forgive the fact Liverpool fans are still on such a high from Thursday night...
