The turn of the century has seen a whole host of players set new records in the fields of goal scoring and assisting teammates.

From Lionel Messi scoring 91 goals in a calendar year, to Thomas Muller recording 21 assists in a single Bundesliga season just last week, the last 20 years have been pretty spectacular.

Now, when it comes to goal involvements, we all know Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are streets ahead of the rest.

But it's always intriguing to see how the pair rank alongside the best of the rest. So below, we've provided the 25 players with the most goal involvements since the year 2000.

Surprisingly, only one active Premier League player makes the cut!

All data sourced from Transfermarkt.

25. Dries Mertens - 426 (238 goals and 188 assists in 688 games)

After smashing it at PSV Eindhoven, Mertens signed for Napoli and is now their record goal scorer with 122 strikes to his name.

24. Robin van Persie - 438 (322 goals and 116 assists in 694 games)

One of the Premier League's greatest ever strikers. Van Persie seemed to score or assist every single week during his days with Arsenal and Manchester United.

23. Arjen Robben - 439 (246 goals and 193 assists in 703 games)

The Bayern Munich legend recently announced his return to the professional game after signing with FC Groningen. That left-foot has some more havoc to wreak!

22. Frank Lampard - 444 (276 goals and 168 assists in 874 games)

The only central midfielder in the top 25, which probably isn't surprising when you consider he's Chelsea's all-time top scorer.

21. Gonzalo Higuain - 449 (336 goals and 113 assists in 698 games)

A figure of ridicule at times, but Higuain's record speaks for itself. In 2015/16, he scored 36 goals in just 35 Serie A games at Napoli.

20. Dirk Kuyt - 461 (297 goals and 164 assists in 840 games)

The Liverpool legend's output is seriously underrated, especially at Feyenoord, where he scored 19 league goals in the 2015/16 season.

19. Edinson Cavani - 469 (389 goals and 80 assists in 668 games)

El Matador has been one of the great strikers of the modern era. Let's hope we see the Uruguayan move to the Premier League this summer after his contract at PSG recently expired.

18. David Villa - 473 (386 goals and 87 assists in 740 games)

The man who made goal scoring look so easy with Valencia, Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Villa scored 28 La Liga goals in the 2008/09 season alone.

=16. Edin Dzeko - 475 (334 goals and 141 assists in 697 games)

Players don't come much more underrated than Dzeko. The Bosnian has not only scored goals for fun at Wolfsburg, Man City and Roma, he's also notched assists at a more than decent rate.

=16. Thomas Muller - 475 (251 goals and 244 assists in 665 games)

One of only four players in the top 25 to register 200+ in both goals and assists. Not bad Thomas, not bad.

15. Didier Drogba - 483 (352 goals and 131 assists in 750 games)

Probably Chelsea's greatest ever player, Drogba was the definition of a 'complete striker' in his pomp.

=13. Miroslav Klose - 485 (324 goals and 161 assists in 767 games)

Just look at those assist numbers from Klose! The German was far, far more than just a predatory goal scorer.

=13. Hulk - 485 (307 goals and 178 assists in 601 games)

The Brazilian sold his soul to move to China, but at least he's smashed it out there. Hulk could even move into the top 10 before the end of his career.

12. Neymar - 495 (305 goals and 190 assists in 501 games)

Another player who's going to shoot up this list in due course. Neymar has played 164 games less than anybody else in the top 25, which highlights just how ridiculously good he has been.

11. Klass-Jan Huntelaar - 497 (399 goals and 98 assists in 714 games)

An elite finisher in his prime, Huntelaar also contributed with his fair share of assists. In 2007/08 with Ajax, the Dutchman scored 33 goals and assisted another 8 in 34 games.
