Spurs close in on deal for Southampton star

Tottenham Hotspur are determined to strengthen their squad this summer.

With the North London side way off the pace in their pursuit of a top four finish, it's inevitable that a big summer in the transfer market beckons.

Jose Mourinho's side are nine points behind fourth-place Chelsea at present, and with just seven games left it's likely that they'll miss out on a place in the Champions League next term.

That means that recruitment needs to be perfect if they're to get themselves back on track next term.

One player who has been linked is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Saints star is reportedly a top summer target for Jose Mourinho's side as they look to bolster their midfield.

Hojbjerg is entering the final year of his contract on the South coast, and Southampton CEO Martin Semmens has made it clear that the club won't stand in his way if a suitable offer is made.

The 24-year-old is keen to play at the highest level and would cost in the region of £25million - a fee that Spurs could be willing to part with.

Tottenham are reported to have already made an offer for the player, with Foot Mercato claiming that a deal is close to being finalised.

The writing has been on the wall for Hojbjerg at Southampton since the decision was made to remove him as club captain.

Explaining the decision, Ralph Hasenhuttl told Hampshire Live: "No, he will not be the captain.

"I spoke to him, we have an agreement. He wanted to receive clearly what I think about it, and I said if you do not extend your contract you cannot captain anymore this team.

"It’s a special situation for such a player who is very professional, absolutely a difficult thing to handle and he shows immediately that it’s absolutely okay for him, yeah."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

The writing looks to be on the wall for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The midfielder is clearly keen to challenge himself at the highest level and it seems that this summer will be his opportunity to move.

Tottenham Hotspur are keen to strengthen their side this summer, and while Hojbjerg might not be their top target, he will certainly provide value for money at £25million.

It'll be a blow to Southampton to lose him, but if they can reinvest those funds in someone who wants to be at the club then they'll be happy.
