Last week, Lionel Messi turned 33.It was a reminder to football fans to appreciate arguably the greatest player of all time while he’s around. The same goes to Cristiano Ronaldo - who turned 35 back in February. The two superstars have won 11 of the last 12 Ballon d’Ors and, despite their advancing years, are still the two best players in the world. That much was demonstrated on Tuesday night.Within minutes of each other, Ronaldo and Messi got themselves on the scoresheet.First up, Ronaldo picked up the ball on the halfway line, ran with it and produced an unstoppable 25-yard screamer to put his Juventus side 2-0 ahead against Genoa.

What. A. Goal.

Not bad for a 35-year-old.

Ronaldo’s 728th career goal helped the Old Lady win 3-1 as they took a big step towards the Serie A title.

Just a few minutes after that Ronaldo goal, Barcelona were awarded a penalty against Atletico Madrid.

With the scores level at 1-1 in Barca’s crucial title clash, there was only one man taking it - Messi.

He stepped up and produced an incredible Panenka penalty to bring up his 700th goal in his 861st game.

It means Messi joins Ronaldo as the only active players to have reached 700 goals.

Unfortunately for him, Barca couldn’t hold onto their 2-1 lead and eventually drew 2-2 to Atleti as their title chances took yet another blow.

But it was yet another night that reminded us that Messi and Ronaldo are the two greatest players of all time.

They won’t be at the very top for many more years so let’s appreciate them while they’re still here.

Because football will be much poorer without them.
