Angel Gomes’s Manchester United career is now over after he became a free agent. The highly-rated 19-year-old’s contract expired on Tuesday night.Gomes has been linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent days - including Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona - after he failed to agree terms with the Red Devils.Chelsea had reportedly offered Gomes a lucrative contract after the England Under-20 international turned down United’s final £25,000-a-week offer, but Frank Lampard played down those reports on Tuesday."Yes, I can elaborate to the point that it's never been mentioned at my end; so that's it,” the Chelsea boss said. When asked if there was any interest, Lampard added: “No.”One United player disappointed by Gomes’s departure is their talented young striker Mason Greenwood.Greenwood, who scored a superb goal in United’s convincing 3-0 win over Brighton on Tuesday night, paid tribute to his friend and now former teammate with his celebration at the Amex Stadium. The 18-year-old made an ‘A’ sign - and Gomes immediately knew this was for him.Reacting on Instagram to Greenwood’s tribute, Gomes wrote: "No words! I love you bro. Special special player, thanks for the dedicated goal."

Greenwood then took to Instagram and wrote the following message to his mate: "A promise is a promise."

Man Utd fans on social media are now emotional knowing these two good pals have now been split up…

Still, the same supporters will rest easy knowing that Greenwood is going nowhere.

“He's getting better,” Solskjaer said of Greenwood, whose style of play of reminiscent of Robin van Persie, per the Daily Mail. “You can see clearly that he's maturing and improving, he's only 18 still so we will see more from him.

“I’ve said it throughout the year that, as long as we can get him faced up in and around the box, he'll create chances for us.

“But in this game his hold-up play and his link-up play and general movement was fantastic as well.

“He's a special talent, a special kid that we are going to look after, try to develop into a top, top player. He's doing well now, but he is still young and has things to learn.

“He knows that but we have a special talent there we have to nurture.”
