Lionel Messi may have scored his 700th career goal against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday - but it was still a disappointing evening for the Barcelona captain. After dropping two valuable points against Celta Vigo on Saturday, Barça couldn’t afford to slip up against Atleti. But a 2-2 draw means Real Madrid now have the chance to move four points clear at the top of La Liga when they face Getafe on Thursday night.Diego Costa’s 11th-minute own goal saw Barcelona get off to the perfect start at Camp Nou, but Saul’s penalty shortly afterwards put Diego Simeone’s men back on level terms.Messi then converted from the spot early in the second half, only for Saul to net his second penalty of the evening just after the hour-mark.

The result piles further pressure on Barça head coach Quique Setien who, according to a report from Goal.com earlier this week, will be sacked at the end of the campaign unless he wins either La Liga or the Champions League.

Even when Barça fail to win, Messi tends to produce one or two magical moments over the course of the 90 minutes.

And he wowed fans on social media with a brilliant piece of skill to beat Atletico left-back Renan Lodi.

Messi had the ball on the right touchline and Lodi dived in to dispossess the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

It didn’t work.

Messi, sensing that Lodi was about to dive in, chipped the ball over the 22-year-old Brazil international with a beautifully delicate touch.

Watch it here…

A true master at work.

It’s like he sees everything in slow motion and plays in fast-forward.

Let’s also take a minute to appreciate the manner in which Messi scored his 700th goal.

Scoring a penalty with a Panenka is one thing - but to do it against arguably the world’s best goalkeeper in Jan Oblak deserves respect.

Even at the age of 33, Messi still takes our breath away every time he plays.
