Tottenham travel to Sheffield United on Thursday unbeaten since football restarted.

A 1-1 draw was followed by a win against West Ham as Spurs kept a rare clean sheet at the London Stadium.

One clear area for improvement this summer will be in defence - an area of the pitch Jose Mourinho has struggled to fix since he walked into the club.

The Lilywhites have conceded a whopping 42 goals in all competitions throughout his tenure, and if they're to get back to a position where they're challenging for the Champions League, reinforcements will be needed.

However, another area where they could do with more goals and steel is in midfield.

If reports are to be believed, they could well do just that. And they may well prise away one of the most gifted players in his position in Europe.

Foot Mercato said on Tuesday that Tottenham were looking towards Serie A and in particular Lazio for one of their marquee signings of 2020.

Milinkovic-Savic

That player happens to be Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The French outlet claims that the Serbian is of great interest to Spurs who have sufficient financial standing to be able to conclude a deal in the summer. That's providing they sell players too.

Mourinho was a keen admirer of Milinkovic-Savic during his days at Manchester United and it now looks as though he wants to sign him again.

And who can blame him? The midfield general is a tenacious machine, capable of bullying players and scoring goals at will.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

The Serbia international is one of the most gifted footballers in the world at the moment.

In 2019/20, he's scored six times and produced seven assists for his teammates. On top of that, he's won 3.4 aerial duels per game and been successful from 1.8 tackles per match.

He is the definition of the complete midfielder, possessing the ability to do almost anything in the middle of the park.

It's hardly a surprise that he's been compared to the great Zinedine Zidane already.

The 25-year-old's current agent is former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman, someone who has seemingly run out of superlatives for his client, handing out praise that proves Spurs would secure quite the coup if they added Milinkovic-Savic to their ranks.

In 2018, Kezman stated: "He has remarkable attributes and you'll not find another player in the world with that power, muscular structure and height combined with technique and tactical awareness. He has the touch of a Brazilian and some of the things he does remind me of Zinedine Zidane.

"I've played with Arjen Robben, Frank Lampard and some of the best in Europe and I think Sergej can surpass them if he keeps this up. He could soon be a candidate for the Ballon d'Or."

It's not estimated just how much the Serb would cost Daniel Levy, but valued at £57.6m by Transfermarkt, he'd certainly cost a pretty penny.
