Tottenham Hotspur’s summer business may well rest on their ability to qualify for the Champions League.

A fifth-placed finish could well be enough given that Manchester City are banned from next season’s competition.

Jose Mourinho’s side are currently seventh in the Premier League ahead of Thursday’s clash with Sheffield United.

They lie seven points behind Manchester United in fifth but can cut that gap to four if they beat Chris Wilder’s side.

Champions League qualification could well boost the coffers for the north London club, and plans are underway to bring in reinforcements to their squad.

Fussball Transfers reports that Spurs have made an enquiry in regards to securing Ivan Perisic’s signature in the coming transfer window.

The winger is on loan at Bayern Munich from Inter Milan and he will stay with the club until the end of the season.

The Bavarian giants had the option to sign Perisic for €20 million (£18m) but they have let that expire; Inter now want €15m (£13.5m).

Bayern are said to have focused on securing the signing of Leroy Sane from Manchester City – they have struck an agreement that could be worth £54.8m – and that could well see the 31-year-old depart.

Along with Spurs, Manchester United are also said to be interested in Perisic.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

This feels like an odd deal.

Spurs don’t really have a need to sign a winger this summer unless a number of players leave.

Perisic can play on either flank – he has scored four goals and registered six assists this season – but the north London club have a number of options to call upon.

They have Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura, Ryan Sessegnon, and Steven Bergwijn who are all natural wingers, while Erik Lamela can also play on the flanks.

A deal to sign Perisic just doesn’t make financial sense; there are areas in the squad that Spurs need to strengthen before they recruit new wingers.

They need back-up to Harry Kane, they could use a new defensive midfielder after Eric Dier’s transition to a centre-back, and they could use depth at full-back too.

Perisic can’t play in any of those positions. He should be ignored.
