Celtic's hopes of signing Fraser Forster again were dealt a catastrophic blow on Wednesday.

The Daily Mail reported that Southampton wanted him back at the club for the 2020/21 season, ready to challenge Alex McCarthy for the number 1 spot.

Neil Lennon initially thought he could bring the goalkeeper back to Parkhead for a further spell but that now looks entirely out of the question.

Fortunately for the Hoops, they have other targets in mind.

Joe Hart was linked last week after his contract with Burnley expired, while Greek stopper Vasilis Barkas has been a constant theme in the news.

However, there is a new name at the forefront of Lennon's mind now.

That happens to be David Marshall, someone plying their trade at Wigan.

Unfortunately for the Latics, they've just entered administration, which could leave Celtic with a free shot at signing the 35-year-old.

Marshall

Per the print version of the Daily Mail (via The Scottish Sun), Celtic are considering making a move for the veteran with Forster's return now looking unlikely.

Highly-regarded in Glasgow already, he could re-sign for the club he left all the way back in 2007.

Marshall is currently valued at just £360,000 according to Transfermarkt.

Marshall

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Few will need reminding of Marshall's heroics against Barcelona when he was just a teenager but 13 years on from when he first departed, it would be a fairy-tale ending to his career if he re-joined Celtic.

His boyhood club, Marshall was eventually phased out of the Hoops side when Gordon Strachan arrived at the club, conceding nine goals in his first two matches.

However, he is a player who has since gone onto earn fine praise from him when representing Scotland.

In 2013, Strachan was left in awe by the goalkeeper, suggesting he had a good personality.

"Marshall has been very impressive recently. I had him at Celtic when he was a young man and he’s a very quiet individual. He had everything but he seemed to lack a personality once he walked on to the pitch." he said.

Strachan added: "David has found that personality now. He’s still quiet but personality comes in different ways."

The stopper's career has been largely formed in England where he's played 34 times for Wigan this term, keeping 12 clean sheets in all competitions.

Familiar with Parkhead already, he'd be a fine replacement for the departing Forster.
