However, after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga appealed for offside, VAR decided to see if Michail Antonio was interfering as he led on the floor.And after three-and-a-half minutes, VAR ruled that he, indeed, was. No goal.
To make matters worse, Chelsea went up the other end and won themselves a penalty, which Willian put away to put the Blues 1-0 up.
Talk about rubbing salt into wounds.
However, on the stroke of half time, Soucek did get himself on the scoresheet from a corner - and this time it counted.
The clash is obviously very important to both sides - and they could be encouraged by results earlier in the day.
Chelsea had the chance to go third in the table after Leicester had lost 2-1 to Everton at Goodison Park.
Meanwhile, for West Ham, they saw both Bournemouth and Norwich lose heavily to Newcastle and Arsenal respectively meaning they had a chance to move clear of the relegation zone.
Just how important that VAR call might be come the end of the season remains to be seen...
