There are many ways in which you can pick up a yellow card in football.
It could be for a tactical foul. Or for dissent. Or, these days, for simulation.
Some players just love getting the referee to flash them a yellow card.
This season, Paderborn midfielder Klaus Gjasula set a Bundesliga record with 17 yellow cards to his name. Throughout his career, the 30-year-old has been booked 132 times in 329 games.
However, that’s not enough to make transfermarkt’s list of 25 players with the most yellow cards since 2000.
Let’s see who does make it though:
25 | Lorik Cana | 162 yellow cards
The Albanian picked up plenty of cards during his time at Marseille, Lazio, Paris Saint-Germain, Sunderland, Galatasary and Nantes.
24 | Jermaine Jones | 163 yellow cards
The American picked up 66 yellow cards in 185 matches for Schalke and 30 bookings in 93 games for Eintracht Frankfurt. Good effort.
23 | Leonardo Ponzio | 164 yellow cards
The River Plate midfielder has picked up 82 yellows since he joined the club in 2012.
22 | Alexandru Gatcan | 165 yellow cards
The Moldovan has spent his career in Russia and racked up 101 yellows and 10 reds in 315 matches whilst at Rostov.
21 | Pepe | 165 yellow cards
Only 165 yellow cards for Pepe. We’re amazed.
20 | Jelle van Damme | 166 yellow cards
The Belgian is currently without a club having left KSC Lokeren. His record of 12 yellows in 25 games wasn’t enough to convince them of a new contract.
19 | Darijo Srna | 167 yellow cards
The retired Croat picked up 128 yellow cards during his long spell at Shakhtar Donestsk.
18 | Rafael Marquez | 167 yellow cards
The mad Mexican earned himself 52 yellows during his time at Barcelona.
17 | Daniele de Rossi | 167 yellow cards
Have you seen the tattoo on his calf? No wonder he picked up 167 yellow cards.
16 | Stathis Tavlaridis | 169 yellow cards
The former Arsenal and Portsmouth defender never really did learn to tackle, did he?
15 | Alberto Lopo | 171 yellow cards
Lopo’s dirtiest spell was at Espanyol, where he played 186 times and earned 67 yellow cards and eight red cards.
14 | Javier Mascherano | 175 yellow cards
Mascherano’s lack of pace earned him plenty of yellow cards during his career.
12 | Matteo Contini | 176 yellow cards
Contini played for a whole host of Italian clubs and it looked his sole responsibility was to kick people. His most yellows came at Parma - where he received 36.
11 | Arturo Vidal | 180 yellow cards
Another surprise entry…not.
